Foottroller setup problems and fixes

  1. Foottroller Hub shows data but X/Y don’t move

A: Foottroller is designed to prevent from generating accidental controls. The movement controls in various directions are generated with specific foot gestures. Video demo

  2. Walk-in-place keeps stopping

A: When walking in place, ensure that only one foot is on the ground at a time. If both feet touch the ground simultaneously, even briefly, it will trigger the stop condition. Practice switching between standing on only the left foot and standing on only the right foot while walking in place. The frequency of this switch will control your movement speed.

  3. Movement is too slow or too fast

A: The initial speed of the movement can be controlled with the tilt of the right/left foot that triggers the movement before starting walking/running in place. The initial speed is maintained after the walking/running in place starts at a medium step frequency. Before taking the first step, increase/decrease the foot tilt/angle to move faster/slower. Video demo

Form version 1.8, Foottroller hub has an advanced locomotion mode that works with Foottroller Dev. mode. It allows adjustment of movement speed corresponding to walk/run-in-place. Video guide

  4. Do I have to keep stepping after I start?

A: No. After starting walking/running in place, the player can put both feet on the ground with one of them in a tilted position. The movement will continue as the same speed. This allows the player to rest, or keep upper body steady for accurate aim while moving in the game. Video demo

  5. The game crashes when Foottroller connects

A: This happens for some VR games in some PCs. The solution is to user hidhide software to hide Foottroller from the affected VR games. Follow this video Instructions to solve the problem.

  6. I can go forward but not back

A: Make sure that the required buttons are pressed when starting the movement with Foottroller. When movement cannot be started in a direction, one of the four buttons of Foottroller may stopped working. Switch Foottroller to Dev. mode. Use windows usb game controller software to check if all four buttons of Foottroller function properly. If there is a problem, contact support@jptiinc.com for assistance.

  7. SteamVR binding doesn’t work

A: SteamVR binding may be affected by settings in Steam on a PC. To fix the problem, try 1. disable steamInput for the game, 2. Go to steamVR control binding setup page, and set the active binding to be the default one. Contact support@jptiinc.com for assistance if the issue is not resolved.

  8. No binding profile for my Steam game

A: a) Some VR games use legacy binding in SteamVR. There is a chance that Foottroller locomotion can be directly used in the game without adding a game specific binding profile.

    b) If the VR game supports OpenXR, consider using virtual desktop and VDXR instead of SteamVR. Video instruction

    c) Create and add a Foottroller binding profile for the game, which involves i) create a binding profile json file in the Foottroller SteamVR driver's input folder, ii) modify the controller_profile.json file to include the binding profile, and iii) restart SteamVR. For assistance, contact support@jptiinc.com.

  9. Running doesn’t make me faster in-game

A: Foottroller can easily detect running and walking. However the current Foottroller driver does not differentiate them. When walking/running in place, the movement speed is controlled only by the frequency of the steps. Running does not necessarily increases the step frequency, and the movement speed.
