Joystick rim mode in Foottroller Hub

Traditional joystick mode and its limits

Most games read a joystick only while it sits outside a small dead zone around the center. When you let the stick spring back to center, the control goes back to zero.

That works for momentary steering, but not for controls that should stay put—like throttle in a flight sim—after you stop moving the stick.

How rim operation works

In rim mode, Foottroller Hub only generates active control while the stick is pushed out into an outer “rim” ring—not while it’s near the center.

Two values matter:

• Entry point — where the stick first hits the rim (as an angle around the circle).

• Rim distance — how far you’ve traveled along the rim from that entry point (clockwise = positive, counterclockwise = negative). You can keep circling, so rim distance isn’t capped.

For a one-axis control such as throttle, Hub turns rim distance into a change up or down (for example, degrees moved ÷ 90). When you leave the rim and the stick returns toward center, the control goes inactive—and the last value holds. The same idea can drive other holdable axes (for example rudder-style controls) when you map them that way.

Multi-function control with entry-point

The entry-point angle also chooses which function you’re adjusting.

Example: enter the rim on the left half of the stick’s circle to adjust one axis (such as rudder), and enter on the right half to adjust another (such as throttle). One stick, several holdable controls—depending on where you first touch the rim.

Advantages

  • Values can hold after you release the stick.

  • Traveling along the rim gives a wide, precise range—good for fine throttle (and similar) adjustments.

Used in Foottroller Hub flight mode

Hub v1.9 uses rim mode on a gamepad’s left stick for throttle, elevator, and control wheel, while Foottroller handles rudder and toe brakes.
